About Indian Vehicle Registration Numbers
Standard Registration
Indian vehicle numbers follow the format SS·DD·LL·NNNN:
· SS — 2-letter State/UT code (e.g. PB, DL, MH)
· DD — 2-digit RTO district code
· LL — 1–2 letter series code
· NNNN — 4-digit registration number
BH Series (Bharat Series)
Introduced in 2021 for central government and private employees who frequently transfer between states. Format: YY·BH·NNNN·LL where YY = year of first registration, NN = 4-digit number, LL = letter series. No need to re-register on interstate transfer.
Old Delhi Numbering
Delhi used to have separate codes under MCD (Municipal Corporation of Delhi). Old Delhi number plates may show DL followed by codes 01–12. The newer unified Delhi MCD has consolidated many of these. DL01 was Delhi Central/North, DL02 Delhi West, etc.
High-Security Number Plates
Since 2019, all new vehicles must have HSRP (High Security Registration Plates) with a laser-etched PIN, hot-stamped IND hologram, and a chromium-based sticker on the windshield. These are unique to each vehicle and tamper-evident.
